Most treatment programs for children and adolescent with sexual behavior problems focus on relapse prevention and behavior modification treatment strategies. This workshop will present a holistic and developmental model for understanding and treating these frightening behaviors and will include: understanding the relationship between early trauma and neurological functioning: impulse control; attention; language processing, and executive functioning. Participants will learn a specific treatment model that will produce positive treatment results.
Kevin Creeden, M.A., is the Director of Assessment and Research at the Whitney Academy. He has over 30 years of experience treating sexually and physically aggressive youth and has authored articles and book chapters on the neuro-developmental impact of trauma on sexual behavior problems. Mr. Creeden has taught at Boston College, Harvard Medical School and Boston University.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy In Real World Settings

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a leading example of an evidence based practice. This method is increasingly implemented in a variety of settings such as schools, residential treatment settings and mental health clinics. The treatment has been demonstrated to be effective with people who are in persistant emotional distress, have chronically unstable relationships and present with recurrent self injury and/or suicidal behavior.
This presentation will provide an overview of: The theoretical foundations underlying DBT; The methodology of DBT individual therapy; The hierarchy of treatment targets; The 4 skill groups and how the treatment can be implemented in a variety of settings.
Jennifer Eaton, M.S., is the Director of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Services at The Bridge of Central Massachusetts. She oversees 8 DBT programs for adolescents and adults. Ms. Eaton has trained and consulted to the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services, the New York Office of Developmental Disabilities, the Alabama Mentor Network, as well as many schools and clinics. Ms. Eaton has received advanced, intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and is also very experienced in mindfulness practices.

This training will empower clinicians to understand how anxiety disorders evolve, habituate, and cause suffering to the patient. Dr Moran will present evidenced-based interventions for patients suffering from five major anxiety disorders: GAD, Panic Disorder, Phobias, PTSD, and OCD. Differential diagnosis and co-morbid presentations will be discussed, specifically depression and substance abuse. Diagnostic decision-making, clinical and psychopharmacological interventions will be reviewed.
Peter Moran, Ph.D. is the Clinical Managing Partner of Prescott Healthcare, a multidisciplinary group practice. Dr. Moran is a staff psychologist at the Worcester Medical Center and teaches at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Assumption College. Mindfulness Strategies for Mental Health Professionals

This workshop will allow participants to learn about the use and benefits of mindfulness skills in clinical practice and in their personal lives. Mindfulness skills have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the emotional upheaval that is associated with a variety of diagnoses. In addition, mindfulness skills can help practitioners cope with the emotional challenge of working with difficult clients and a hectic work environment. A variety of mindfulness strategies will be taught for participants’ personal use and to teach to clients they treat.
Dr. Walsh is Executive Director of The Bridge and an internationally-recognized expert on the subject of self-injury. He is the author of the book, Treating Self-Injury: A Practical Guide (Guilford Press, 2006). He was intensively trained in DBT in 2000, and practices and teaches mindfulness.
iMs. Eaton s the Director of DBT Services at The Bridge. She oversees eight DBT programs for adolescents and adults. She has consulted on DBT to the Mass. Dept. of Youth Services, the New York Office of Developmental Disabilities, the Alabama Mentor Network, schools and clinics.

Emerging Legal and Ethical Risks in Clinical Practice:
Identifying and Managing Your Professional Risks When Working on Challenging Cases

This training will identify the emerging trends in legal and ethical risks clinicians are encountering in daily practice including: informed consent and empirically-based clinical practice; use of specialized assessment tools in risk assessment and management; maintaining professional role and boundaries in the electronic era; duties towards trainees, supervisees, and those to whom clinicians delegate client responsibilities. Also reviewed and discussed are: key differences between licensure actions and liability lawsuits; confidentiality and privilege; responding to subpoenas and court orders; and duties to warn or protect. The treating clinician’s role in divorce child custody proceedings, abuse and neglect investigations, and providing court testimony is also discussed.
Robert Kinscherff, Ph.D., J.D., is a forensic psychologist and an attorney who current serves as Director of Clinical Services for Easter Seals of New Hampshire. He has previously served as Assistant Commissioner for Forensic Mental Health for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. Dr. Kinscherff is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology
